Registration of Architects is important in regulating the practice of architecture. Registration ensures that the general community can rely on the fact that people who use the description 'architect' are qualified both academically and by practical experience to perform their professional role to the standard which could be reasonably expected of an architect.
Under the provision of the Architectural Practice Act 2009 candidates for registration are required to pass "an examination in architectural practice" conducted by the Board.
The examination is a composite examination conducted in three parts broadly as follows:-
Part 1 Eligibility
Part 2 National Examination Paper
Part 3 Examination by Interview
This is an appraisal of the Log Book and Statement of Practical Experience.
Important information for candidates can be found at www.aaca.org.au.
Electronic Log Books
This is a one-hour 'closed book' multiple choice question paper. It is necessary to pass this paper to qualify to sit for Part 3. A sample paper is available.

The National Examination Paper (NEP) is offered twice a year. The first session being in April and the second in September. For further details of examination dates for 2011 see APE Calendar 2012.
A pass is required to proceed to interview (Part 3).
This is an examination by interview by two examiners who are experienced practitioners, on the candidate's range of work and experience. Duration: up to one hour.
